Lilly Belle Rose Cleary, now known as Lilly Cleary, is a respected Sarasota attorney. While some of her previous cases may have been a bit odd, such as the pet psychic and the orange libeler, she represents all of her clients in a mostly cool and collected manner. However, all of that changes when she returns to her hometown in Georgia, where her estranged mother has been hospitalized. When Lilly reached the outskirts of Bugfest, GA, she felt herself reliving her dysfunctional childhood.

With her mother in a coma that shows no signs of abating, Lilly attempts to make some sense of her mother's house and papers. All Lilly knows is that her mother shot a man and that a developer wants to turn the sleepy backward town into a resort community. While she can’t imagine anyone spending good money to vacation in Bugfest, Lilly nonetheless knows that it is home to those who have chosen to stay, including her mother. Her mother's house has been trashed and her papers are in a mess. Lilly can’t tell what is missing – or why. What has her mother done to anger someone to this extreme?

Along the way, vegetarian Lilly gets involved in trying to halt trafficking in illegal exotic animal meat, smuggled into the country for human consumption. While she admits that eating a dead cow is pretty sick to her way of thinking, Lilly is truly appalled by the thoughts of someone eating monkey meat.

This is the fourth in the series featuring the entertaining Lilly Cleary. She is a fun and, often funny, protagonist. But don't think these books are merely slap-stick and silly one-liners. Underneath the crazy clients, her strange upbringing and very unorthodox past, Lilly is passionate about the law and her friends and clients. This is her first foray out of the sunshine state, and her return to her roots brings some resolution to past conflicts. While it is her past that has created the woman she is, she has definitely gone beyond it to become the lively, intelligent character that she is today.

The author is a former appellate attorney, now living and writing in Georgia.
