Harry Devlin is a lawyer, not the most aggressive of that breed; possibly he could be called a little laid-back. His firm has recently moved into very classy quarters, a big step up from their old digs. Harry isn't sure he feels quite at home there, not yet anyway.

Harry's home and work place are in Liverpool. Harry is not so sure he really feels at home in the "new" Liverpool, either – now named European Capital of Culture for 2008. He remembers the old days. But that is all well and good; Harry’s immediate problem is the death notice he has just received. It announces that Harry Devlin died suddenly in Liverpool on Midsummer's Eve. Midsummer's Eve is five days away.

At first Harry thinks it is a joke, but ominous events occur - one of his law partners is attacked in their supposedly secure parking garage and Harry's office is trashed. Harry then learns that their landlord is a gangster and he has installed his girl friend in the penthouse apartment of the building. The girl friend once had a fling with Harry and Harry believes the gangster would react harshly if the truth were known. Harry has a lot on his plate, not the least of which is finding out who has planned his demise on Midsummer's Eve.

Harry Devlin has appeared in more than a half dozen books. He is definitely not a typical lawyer in that he doesn’t see himself as typical. He is a little lonely, but for the most part is happy in his own skin. Some people who do not know him well think that Harry is rather inept, or perhaps sloppy in his work habits. Nothing could be further from the truth. Harry is an interesting character, whether one is following the series or meeting him for the first time in this book.

Martin Edwards is a prolific writer with several series that he keeps up; he has also written short stories and non-fiction.
