Claire Malloy, her daughter Caron, and Caron's best friend, Inez, are in Luxor, Egypt. They have just checked into the Presidential Suite of the Winter Palace Hotel, and, as usual, Caron is giving Claire stick. Claire is supposedly on her honeymoon. She has finally married Lt Peter Rosen of the Farberville (Arkansas) police department, but he is nowhere to be found. He is off doing police stuff while Claire has to amuse the two teenagers. Inez, as usual, is a fount of information, and all Caron wants to do is go shopping.

Peter arrives with a local senior policeman who has assigned a car and driver to take Claire and the girls sightseeing whenever they want to go out. They have tea and one of the locals invites them to a small reception. After all, one needs fresh blood every once in a while. Winters get boring with only the same group of aging aristocrats to visit.

The girls get invited to a birthday party at the home of a local young woman who is a bit eccentric. They are late coming back to the hotel and Claire is beside herself. The girls finally return with a fantastic story which, of course, Claire and Peter doubt, but which turns out to be at least partially true.

If you are a fan of Claire and her crazy daughter, then you know that they will get into trouble and also manage to get out of it. But this time, they get into trouble in Egypt amongst the ancient monuments and artifacts. A blond American student is kidnapped by a man on horseback carrying a gun and Claire rescues her, as well as getting into trouble herself. All in all, this is a typical Claire Malloy book albeit one that takes place in a well researched and exotic arena. The President of the Arkansas Mystery Writers' Association has outdone herself this time.
