M J Holliday is a professional medium who specializes in helping ghostly apparitions attain their final resting places. Along with partners Gilly Gillespie and Dr. Steven Sable, M J travels from her headquarters in Boston to upstate New York at the behest of her best friend Karen. A ghost at the posh Northelm Boarding School in Lake Placid has attacked Karen's niece, and the poor girl is now home and afraid to return to school. Known as Hatchet Jack, the ghost has been seen by students and faculty members numerous times over the past thirty years, but Dean Owen Habbernathy roundly denies his activity. Habbernathy is loath to allow M J access until Karen strikes a deal that will fund much needed reconstruction at the school.

Given only a few days to find the ghost and send him packing, M J and her team take a variety of hi-tech equipment to Northelm the night they arrive in Lake Placid. M J immediately makes contact with Jack, but is attacked by the ghost and must flee the school. Further visits elicit another ghostly presence in the school, that of a young boy named Eric. M J and Gilly delve into town records to learn more about Hatchet Jack and Eric. They also convince the local police that Jack is real and dangerous after finding a skeleton buried near the school grounds. Backed by the power of the law, M J begins to make progress in her attempts to banish Jack to the netherworld. All seems to be going well until a body shows up on the school grounds, and this time, the murder can't be blamed on Hatchet Jack.

Victoria Laurie writes two series featuring psychics, this current book being the second in her Ghost Hunter series. DEMONS is a light and fluffy read featuring likable main characters and an assembly of lesser, but interesting, secondary characters. Those who believe in ghosts will enjoy the way M J communicates with these apparitions and her sympathy with their unsettled condition. Those who don’t believe in ghosts will probably not pick up the book, but they’ll miss out on a nicely plotted tale that includes a little romance and a lot of info on hi-tech gadgetry.
