In the height of a hot New York summer, Assistant District Attorney Alex Cooper finds herself investigating a string of murders. Women’s bodies are appearing in some of the least-populated parts of New York City and it is clear that the killer is particularly sadistic and dangerous. At the same time, Alex’s attention is being distracted by an old case in which the jailed perpetrator has vowed revenge. Has Alex finally bitten off more than she chew?

As ever, Linda Fairstein has written an extremely interesting novel. Yes, the same old recurring points – such as the competition between Alex and the detectives, Mercer and Chapman, to answer the Jeopardy! Question – may have become a little tiring now, but the quality of Fairstein’s writing remains at the same high level.

She also does a little to vary the script. For example, there is no visit to Martha’s Vineyard in this novel – something that had become a regular occurrence in the past. It could be argued that the denouement, which goes the way of all the Alex Cooper novels, is predictable, but it is, perhaps, unavoidable in a novel of this ilk.

KILLER HEAT is made even more interesting by Fairstein’s choices for locations for the disposal of the women’s bodies. Rather than choosing traditional, well-known New York locations, Fairstein opts for some rather rare ones, which would, perhaps, not even be known to the average New Yorker. Her descriptions of the areas and explanations of the history make the book even more interesting.

As ever, Linda Fairstein does not disappoint. Her mix of excitement and detailed explanations on sex crime laws make for appealing reading as she strikes the right balance between information and story telling, the bulk of which is done through dialogue. KILLER HEAT is extremely enjoyable and will no doubt sell well.
