Years ago, during a terrible heat wave, a young woman went missing in the Grand Canyon. No one ever discovered what happened to her.

Now Dr Alan Gregory is dealing with his shaky marriage while he and his wife are separated as she looks for a daughter she abandoned years ago. Meanwhile, Alan's dear friend Adrienne dies and she leaves her son in Alan and his wife's hands. But her brother has another idea and he wants Adrienne's son to live with him. Alan wants what's best for the boy and agrees to let him stay with his relatives as Alan lives nearby in NYC.

To Alan's surprise his ex-wife Meredith suddenly shows up and she asks for his help. It seems that she and her fiancé have found a woman to carry their child, since Meredith can't seem to carry to term. But after everything is all set, the woman, Lisa, suddenly disappears. Meredith asks Alan to please look for her. Because Alan can't say no, he agrees.

Alan discovers that the surrogate, Lisa, was one of a group of young people visiting the Grand Canyon during a heat wave a few years ago. During that time a young woman, not from their group, went missing and some of them stayed and tried to help find her. But she never was found.

As Alan delves into the story he finds connections to the missing Lisa, and he also sees that there is danger in looking into the situation. But Alan can't give up looking, even if he does put himself in danger.

DEAD TIME is certainly filled with action. There's danger at many turns and Alan has to use his brain to work his way out of harm's way. All this is going on while Alan is trying to have a steady life with a good influence on the boy his friend left to him to raise, all the while trying to keep his own relationship with his new wife steady.

DEAD TIME is definitely for people who are already fans of the Dr Alan Gregory series. Though the book can be said to stand on its own, in order for the reader to care about all of the story and its effect on Alan Gregory, they have to be fond of the character already. If you're new to the series there really isn't much reason for you to have any interest in this book and Alan's trials while he lives through it.

Because I am not a fan of the series I found all of it to be a bit empty. The end of the story didn't ring a satisfying note in me and it all fell a bit flat as the ending simply works to get the readers ready for the next in the series.
