It's Christmas time at the Pennyfoot Hotel and owner Cecily Sinclair Baxter has decorated it beautifully. The only thing left to do is to get fresh holly and arrange it about the rooms. Her husband, Baxter, and the hotel's stable manager, Samuel, take a horse-and-carriage to the woods to collect some that night. But when the sleigh returns with an unknown dead man's body in it and no clue as to where Baxter and Samuel are, Cecily holds herself together and gets a search party out to find them.

When the local police are called in Cecily sees that they are not at all interested in spending their holiday searching for her husband, so she understands that she must use her head and find them herself. She rallies the many members of the hotel staff and her friends to search. Soon Samuel is found but he is very ill and has lost his memory from an injury to his head. He doesn't remember what happened and can't tell if Baxter is alive or dead. Cecily becomes even more dedicated to find her beloved husband and find the killer, no matter the risk.

SHROUDS OF HOLLY is filled with a wonderful cast of characters in an Edwardian setting, and is a lovely mystery cozy. The location is inviting and the Christmas season helps bring out the many emotions that decorate this book. We get to meet the numerous people who work in the hotel and are privy to the romances and intrigue that surround them.

A delightful and civilized book, with little violence and a cast of interesting and charming people, SHROUDS OF HOLLY is a first-rate cozy and the perfect reading material for a cold winter's afternoon.
