The Knights Templar or, to give them their proper name, The Knights of the Temple of Solomon at Jerusalem, was started in about 1119 and was gone by 1312. They were formed to protect pilgrims traveling between the cities that had been conquered by the Christian knights of the First Crusade about 20 years earlier.

The Hospitallers took care of the pilgrims within the various city walls, but once they left the protection of those cities, they were prey to the infidels (Muslims) who really owned the holy land.

The Templars were accepted as a monastic order which would be allowed to kill non-Christians in support of the Holy Land. The Knights would also have to own three horses and arms and armor in order to carry out their duties. They would be allowed meat three times a week in order to keep up their strength. By the middle of the 12th century, the popes had "clearly state(d) that the work of the Templars is for the preservation of the Christian states in the Holy Land."

If we think about the parallels with today, we would possibly come to the conclusion that the Middle East exists in a state of endless war. The Sunni and Shi'ites have been fighting each other since the 12th century. Saladin, the famous leader of the infidels, was a Sunni Kurd who fought both Christians and Shi'ites. As Newman says ". . . wars always run over budget, especially if you lose."

I went to school during World War II through the Korean War. Our history textbooks went from the purchase of Manhattan Island to the War to End All Wars. The same American history was taught in every grade by unimaginative, dull teachers. Finally, in college, I got to study some ancient history and modern European history. But still, I learned most of what I know by reading historical novels

If history textbooks were written the way THE REAL HISTORY BEHIND THE TEMPLARS is, in a funny and colloquial manner, but using primary sources (Newman is well versed in medieval French and Latin among other languages), then perhaps our kids today would have some clue as to what is going on in the world.
