Mercedes (Mercy) Thompson earns her living as a VW mechanic. She was actually raised by werewolves in Montana. Her roommate is a werewolf named Samuel, who happens to be the son of the man who raised her, and a doctor.

Mercy is a walker who can turn into a coyote at will, and her assorted friends from the Old World include werewolves, vampires and assorted other fae. The latter are probably derived from the Skin walkers of Navajo legend, but are not an evil being. In fact, the New World fae have been mostly eliminated by the more traditional old-world werewolves and vampires.

Stefan, her vampire friend, calls her at 3am one morning. He takes her, in coyote form, to the hotel room of Cory Littleton, who is a strange, emaciated, new vampire. It turns out that Cory is possessed by a demon. Actually, he is a sorcerer who was turned by a vampire thinking that having a demon-possessed scion would make the older vampire more powerful. It didn't work. Cory was not controllable.

Mercy in her animal form, is weaker than a werewolf or a vampire, but she has to get involved before Littleton kills too many more people and leaves the future of the shifters and vamps and other assorted gremlins and trolls in doubt.

Patty Briggs' world is one in which the lesser fae are coming out gradually, so as not to scare humans into genocide. The first book in the series MOON CALLED has more to do with were politics, while in this second book, BLOOD BOUND, we learn more about the interaction of all the strange creatures that live among us. It's a worthy series to seek out and I'm glad I did.
