Dog show lover Melanie Travis is very pregnant and a little bored. So she, her Aunt Peg, a poodle judge, and her sister-in-law Bertie, a professional dog trainer, head to the Poconos for a symposium on dog training. The three hope to get some rest and relaxation as they also attend various lectures about judging and training different breeds of dogs. But as in the previous 13 Melanie Travis books, where Melanie goes death seems to follow.

A very popular keynote speaker, Charles Evens, makes a speech stating that dog shows are unethical. The audience is surprised and Charles soon finds that he's made some enemies with his unusual opinion.

When Melanie, Peg, and Bertie find Charles dead in a hot tub, they can see how much Charles's speech bothered his audience. Would anyone really take such an action against Charles because of his speech? Melanie is soon asked by numerous people at the symposium to solve the crime but Melanie has many things on her mind.

First there is her pregnancy to think of, then 60-something Aunt Peg has found a younger boyfriend on the Internet who is also at the Poconos, and she can't forget that Bertie has to be looked after as well. But Melanie can never let a good mystery alone so she, Aunt Peg, and Bertie decide to find out who did the dastardly deed.

HOUNDED TO DEATH by Laurien Berenson is yet another great cozy in this 14th installment in the series. Yes, there is quite a bit about dogs, judging them, showing them and taking care of them, but the book really doesn't let all the information interfere with the good solid murder mystery.

I've read quite few in this series and find them all humorous and interesting. A dog lover I'm not but even I find it appealing to learn all about what goes on behind the scenes at dog shows. There's just enough talk about dogs to pique your interest but not enough to get boring.

Melanie is a perfect character for a cozy. She likes trying to solve murders but she does have a life of her own and the reader learns all about her new husband, her son from her previous marriage, the soon to be new baby and her interactions with Aunt Peg and Bertie.

Spend a lovely, murderous vacation with Melanie and friends as they try to relax at the Poconos. HOUNDED TO DEATH is a perfect cozy that will brighten your day.
