People of the Blood are people who have the ability to use magic. Due to a corruption of the system, women now enslave men and use them for their own purposes. Men get revenge by killing them. Jaenelle is prophesized to rule the Blood as well as have more power than the Lord of Hell, assuming she lives long enough.

She has amazing powers yet her family believes her to be crazy. Therefore, she begins working with Saetan, High Lord of Hell, who assumes the role of her father and teacher. Unfortunately this alliance leaves her exposed to numerous dangerous influences. There are many people who want to control the future Queen of the Blood and will stop at nothing to sway her. Jaenelle must remain confident and sure in order to avoid the fate others plan for her.

I found DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD very difficult to get into. The bitterness and cruelty of the characters are disconcerting character traits. As they are such mean and evil people it is difficult to feel any sympathy for them or empathize with their situations. Even Jaenelle, who is supposed to save the Blood and return it to its glory, has her moments of evilness, pettiness and stubbornness. Regardless of a book's storyline, it is vital that there is at least one character I can care about. As this book did not, it was difficult for me to read.

A lot of the actions done and proposed by the characters in DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD are not necessarily those accepted by modern day society. I do not like authors that attempt to use the erotic or sensual to compensate for plot flaws or character flaws. If a book begins to read like pornography than it should not be classified as fantasy as the classification is misleading and false.

I admit that I wanted to like DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD as I found the idea of a young child stepping up and righting the wrongs appealing. If a book has independent and powerful women I normally enjoy reading it. In this case of this book, too much of the plot focused on those standing in her way and those protecting her too much for Jaenelle to come into her own. While this might change in the rest of the trilogy, I disliked this book too much to read them in order to find out.

While DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD will certainly appeal to people who like dark supernatural thrillers, this book is not going to appeal to readers who cross over into this genre. It will also not appeal to those who prefer their fantasy to have lighter, humorous moments.
