Ridley Jones’ life changed in an instant after she performed a selfless act in 2006’s BEAUTIFUL LIES. While walking on the New York City sidewalks she notices a child who is about to be run over by a truck. In an instant she flies to his defense not knowing that a newspaper photographer is there witnessing the scene and taking a picture at that exact moment.

She became a celebrity that day, but it changed her life in a way she did not imagine. Someone sent her a picture of someone who looked like her with a baby and the message “Are You My Daughter?” This started her on a quest trying to find out who she actually is and getting into some dangerous situations that wouldn’t have happened had she continued to remain anonymous. The end result was exposing a rogue operation called Project Rescue.

SLIVER OF TRUTH continues that tale of Ridley and Project Rescue. A reporter investigating Project Rescue winds up being kidnapped and once again Ridley is involved as she is still trying to make sense of what is going on with her life. The book has what you would expect when it comes to suspense – women in jeopardy (and I don’t mean the game show), and mysterious strangers – but Unger still manages to make it fresh with her unusual take on the book’s first person narrative.

Ridley addresses her readers directly as everything is going on. She does not hold back as to how she is feeling. She is personable, giving readers the illusion that Ridley is just having a conversation with an unknown reader. It is nothing new, but Unger manages to keep it real by not going over the top with how Ridley tells her story. It is almost like if someone is constantly watching her and she knows that. That person is the reader.

The book is a bit tiresome, though, especially after having read BEAUTIFUL LIES a week before this one. Still, Unger knows how to tell a story. Newcomers will not be disappointed.
