Agent Pendergast finally takes his ward, Constance Greene, out of the house that had been her prison and it is now trying to show her the world. After several months of traveling they are at an isolated Tibetan monastery where they are continuing their studies. One of the head monks makes an unusual request to Pendergast to help them retrieve an ancient stolen relic called the Agozyen, which the monks are sworn to protect.

It was stolen by a stranger with a hidden agenda – one that Pendergast must stop in order to save the world. No one has ever seen the Agozyen out of its container for over thousands of years, but the monks believe that it is some sort of Pandora's box – one that should have never been opened.

Pendergast manages to track the object to a luxury cruise ship out on its maiden voyage. The passengers do not know it, but this is going to be a trip they will never forget. The ship is traveling across the Atlantic Ocean with no help in sight. The smuggler opens the box and disasters ensue. Pendergast may be the only one who might be able to contain the evil, but he is going to have to do it with the fight of his life. He is about to face an enemy more powerful than his intellect. If he doesn't stop it, the world, as we know it, will come to an end.

Preston and Child have another winner with this standalone book which continues after the events of THE BOOK OF THE DEAD. It is a rather suspenseful novel with a series of innovative twists and dangers no one could ever imagine. Even though the story goes rather smoothly and quickly, the plot moves at a slow pace adding a new piece to a puzzle that it is not easy to visualize at first.

It gives the readers enough material to satiate their hunger as to what is going on. Once all is revealed, there is not much time left to waste. The ship is about to face its most perilous situation and readers will not want to be left behind. It will leave one wondering, can Pendergast save the day once again? The answer may surprise you.

The book has enough to satisfy the authors' fans and also works well for the newcomers who are not familiar with Pendergast and his ward, but would like to be. THE WHEEL OF DARKNESS is pure action-adventure suspense with a little bit of gore thrown in. If this is the kind of story you enjoy you will not need look any further. This book delivers.
