The National Weapons Alliance has a fourth of July rally event planned. There they will strengthen their resolve regarding politics and the Second Amendment. They will also be entertained by country star Mitch Campbell, who is also their new spokesperson. The only problem with this plan is that Mitch, while high on mushrooms, kills an illegal immigrant. If this news is leaked to the public, the gun control supporters will have a prime example of the dangers of owning guns.

John Marlin, game warden for Blanco Country, is unwilling to overlook the death of anyone regardless of their nationality. To this end, he begins questioning the immigrant community in order to identify the body as well as learn where the victim worked. The trail leads straight back to Campbell's ranch. As the topic of gun control rages throughout the county, Marlin must find the evidence necessary to stop the killer before he strikes again.

In addition to the topic of murder and gun control, GUN SHY has numerous subplots. Mitch Campbell is not who he claims to be and someone is blackmailing him regarding this fact. A former TV star, Sabrina Nash, is worried about her ex-husband. Their child was killed by a gunshot and she fears that he will do something illegal in order to stop the upcoming parole of the killer. There are also groupies, rock star wannabes and crooked politicians through this book.

I enjoy reading the Blanco County/John Marlin series. Although the books can be light-hearted and downright silly, they also provide a glimpse into darker subjects. GUN SHY takes the topic of gun control and presents both side of the story. It looks at the pro-gun and anti-gun communities. It looks at the criminals who use guns, those traumatized by guns as well as those who use guns for hunting and protection. While some of the characters' behavior is ridiculous, a portion of the book does deal with legitimate topics and treats them in a serious manner.

This combination of light-hearted comedy and satire is appealing and makes GUN SHY sure to please.
