Brodie Farrell just wants a quiet life, running her one-woman agency called Looking for Something, taking care of her daughter, enjoying her friendship with Daniel Hood, and her lover Detective Superintendent Jack Deacon. So she agrees to help Daniel refresh his driving skills. It's a dark rainy autumn evening, but Daniel is doing well, until, suddenly, a figure emerges from the alley between two houses and runs into the road.

There is the crash of someone hitting the side of the car, and Daniel stops immediately. (He was only going 15 miles per hour) They get out of the car and see a young woman, who is unhurt, but who accuses Daniel of trying to kill her. They report the accident to the police, even though the girl runs off.

Meanwhile, Deacon has learned that a new drug is being offered on the streets of their seaside town. Two brothers have died from it and several other friends of theirs are in hospital. Analysis shows that the drug is a veterinary tranquilizer now being tested in Germany. The police call it Scram. The forensic chemist calls it Horsefeathers.

Then Allison Barker shows up in Dimmock General Hospital. She has also ingested Scram but she was found on the street while still alive. Her father has died recently and she has lost her job as show jumping rider, since the business had to be sold after her father's death. Daniel takes an interest in Allison, and so does Brodie.

This is the sixth in the Brodie Farrell series. Bannister excels in creating just slightly off-center characters. Brodie never gets the quiet life she craves. Daniel wants more than friendship with Brodie. And Deacon knows that if he wants to keep Brodie, he must change his attitude toward Hood.

I really liked Bannister's Castlemere series which featured three mismatched people. They were three members of the police force, one Jewish, one a woman, and the third an Irishman. This series will do for me until she goes back to Castlemere.
