Loner Jack Reacher is traveling the country as he has been since his retirement from the army a decade ago. He has no possessions other than the ones that fit in his pockets and only one bank account that he uses when he needs money.

When an unexpected deposit is found in his account, he deduces that it is a call for help from one member of his old army special investigators unit. Using his fondness for numbers and math, he is able to figure out who sent the message and where he can contact her.

Right as usual, Reacher hooks up with Frances Neagley who was a sergeant in his old unit. A top-notch soldier, she had refused promotion and now after the military life, she runs a successful investigative agency. She tells him that one of their old ranks has been found dead, his still living body had been sent falling from a helicopter to land in the desert. More troublesome is that she can't find any other members of their old unit. She and Reacher might be the only ones still left alive. They figure it's up to the two of them to find out what is going on and avenge their fallen comrades.

As they dig deeper to get to the reason why their comrades have been killed, using every contact and favor they have collected over the years from people in the highest of clandestine organizations, they uncover clues that tie in with the latest in American military technological weaponry.

As a long-time fan of the series, I found this book to be satisfying and a great read. Those new to the series might be a little annoyed with Reacher's almost superhuman physical prowess and mathematical abilities, all wrapped up in the body of a perfect physical specimen. As I am a fan of the series, I can't really say if this book stands well on its own. I suspect that you need to already be a fan of Jack Reacher in order to fully appreciate this story. Happily, there is more to this book than just Reacher. There is a great deal of non-stop action, high stakes tension and threatening terrorists to be fought.

Instead of the usual loner fighting for the good guys, in this book Reacher is one member of unit of comrades. We get to see how that unit worked so well together. Writer Lee Child has the ability to let the readers know exactly how and why a fighter can decide on a next move. As a non-fighter, I found those descriptive sections absolutely fascinating.

The tension and the action never lets up and readers will find themselves taking deep breaths as the intensity of the story mounts. BAD LUCK AND TROUBLE is a top-notch murder adventure mystery and will keep you enthralled from the first page to the last.
