A flurry of crimes is hitting San Francisco and are all coming across the desk of new homicide detective Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer. The first is the shooting of innocent people on a ferry. Unfortunately, one of the victims onboard was Medical Examiner Claire Washburn and her son. Claire is a close friend of Lindsey and one of the members of the Women's Murder Club, a group of women friends who are all in the business of crime fighting.

Then, after Lindsay gets her wish and is demoted back to Sergeant in homicide and gets back to working on the street (the job she really wanted and loves), a child of rich and famous parents is kidnapped by being pulled into a van, along with the child's nanny. Because a witness said that she heard a gun go off and saw blood on a window of the van, Lindsay and the homicide department are called in.

Lindsay is sorely affected when she gets to know something about the child that has been snatched. The little girl is adorable and suffers from synesthesia. That's when a person sees colors when they hear or see numbers or listen to music. When there is no ransom note, Lindsay and the other cops are afraid that that the child will never be found.

Meanwhile, Lindsey's heart is being knocked around when her long-time, long-distance boyfriend Joe comes to visit. All of a sudden, Lindsey can't stand that he is always traveling to go home and that he is never around for her. And the attraction she has for a fellow cop is starting to heat up, with the cop even stating that he has feelings for her! Lindsey has to decide what to do about both men.

As the police are still searching for any clue to find the missing little girl, another child, a boy is taken from his home. Now that it looks like anyone's child might be the next to be snatched. The whole city is on alert.

Meanwhile, one of the other members of the Women's Murder Club, Cindy Thomas, crime reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, has moved to a new apartment. She loves it, but all of a sudden the bodies of some tenants are being found one by one, murdered with violence but with no clue as to who the killer might be, or why it happened. Without any clues there either, Lindsey is afraid that Cindy might be in danger.

THE 6TH TARGET is written by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro and I have to say, unlike his recent works, I really enjoyed this book. Lately Patterson's writing seem to have been dashed off with little thought to making it satisfying to his fans. Yet, though the reading is still extremely fast and the chapters are still short, this book does justice to the crimes involved and to the characters.

With THE 6TH TARGET, James Patterson once again proves that he is a great writer who can deliver a fast-paced story that can grab the readers and hold on to them until the very last page.
