Ivy Cole has settled in the small community of Doe Springs, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She brought with her a pack of seven dogs, led by the large black dog she calls Aufhocker. Strange things have been happening in Doe Springs. Animals have been killed and several humans have disappeared.

One day, Sheriff Gloria Hubbard and her deputies find the mangled body of Clifford Hughes, a wife beater and the town postman, in the woods near town. It is the day after the full moon. No one mourns Hughes' death, but Hubbard and her crew must investigate.

Before Ivy reached town, animals had been killed. A whole flock of sheep, a herd of pigs, and some other odd animals have been mutilated in much the same way as Hughes. Also, several years before, a young child wandered away from her parents' tent at night and her body was never found. Are all of these related?

Ivy learns of these animal massacres and is appalled. Meanwhile, she picks up her eighth dog, a mangy terrier who is close to death, and takes him to the local vet for treatment before she takes him home.

The townspeople are afraid and lock themselves in at night because the strange creature might attack. The Sheriff is sure there is a correlation between the full moon and the killings but she is hesitant about stating this officially. Meanwhile, Ivy plans her next execution as a werewolf vigilante, and learns there is another werewolf in the woods of Doe Springs.

This is listed as horror by the publisher, but it's sort of a chick-lit version of a werewolf story and is not very horrifying at all. Perhaps it will appeal to the romantic high school girl, if there are any of those around any more.
