It’s tough enough to get a break in the Chicago theater community, as Morgan Taylor knows. It’s even tougher when she’s got a chance to audition for a great part under a famous director and the actress he wants her to read with is uncharacteristically late. It’s toughest when Morgan eventually finds her erstwhile audition partner dead in the bathroom.

Although the police call it a heart attack – Lily London was very old, after all – the superstitious actors soon start whispers about how the play is cursed, and always has been since an intern died when it was first produced years ago. The whispers get louder as yet another actress dies during the read-through – after stealing and eating Morgan’s lunch.

Morgan finds herself attracted to both the investigation and the investigator. She has feelings for Detective Roblings, but he doesn’t understand the acting world the way she does, so she has to serve as both investigator and native guide.

The blurb on the back of the box calls this story undemanding, and it’s a pretty fair assessment. Although Stephanie Brush does a wonderful job of portraying the heroine’s nervous excitement, the story itself is slow-paced, half dealing with Morgan’s messed-up home life and half dealing with show nerves, with a little bit of time left over for a puzzle that isn’t particularly complex.

Still, it was enjoyable enough for me to invest eight hours into it (the downside of all audio books being that they take much more time to listen to than it would take to read the same printed text.) Despite that drawback I find myself more and more attracted to audio books because I have more time to listen these days than I have to sit down and read.

The commute to work is a favorite time, so I was disappointed to see that the CDs were surprisingly thick – so thick that I worried that they might get stuck if I fed them into the car’s CD player. In the end I didn’t try; I test-played one in a drop-load player instead (it played perfectly) and then uploaded the whole thing to my iPod.

While I can’t rave about AUDITION FOR MURDER, I can say that spending some time with Stephanie-as-Morgan is a pleasant way of filling in the background as you take a long trip. Those who like theater in particular will enjoy the insights Morgan has into the rituals and fears of the aspiring actor.
