Wednesday 21 February 1959. Raymond Chandler in a letter to Maurice Guinness about his protagonist Philip Marlowe writes: "I see him always in a lonely street, in lonely rooms puzzled but not quite defeated." This is just one of the snippets of information to be found in the 2007 Granta Diary.

Did you know that on April 10, Harriet Vane purchases arsenic, claiming she needs it to deal with rats. Ten weeks later, her ex-lover dies of arsenic poisoning. And November 11 is the date of DS Edmund J. Exley's annual fitness report. As for January 3, that’s when Mick Stranahan kills an intruder with a 400lb stuffed blue marlin.

I would not normally rave about a diary, but in this case, I have to make an exception with the GRANTA DIARY 2007 – CLASSIC CRIME. This is an excellent diary and a must for all lovers of crime and pulp fiction. With an introduction from Maxim Jakubowski the 2007 diary features reproductions of original book jackets from some of the best-known crime and pulp fiction novels ever to be written.

If you want to have a nostalgic look, back on covers of books (some of them very rare indeed) then you will be able to indulge yourself. Some of them are by well-known authors while some of them are not. The covers include Hank Janson’s pulp book cover WHEN DAMES GET TOUGH, THE ROMAN HAT MYSTERY by Ellery Queen, MURDER AT THE VICARAGE by Agatha Christie, A TASTE FOR DEATH by PD James, I THE JURY by Mickey Spillane, and BOOKED FOR MURDER by Val McDermid to name a few.

The diary not only contains a list of important dates throughout the year but also space for addresses and notes. In some ways, this diary is too good to use!

If you want to be seen with the coolest diary in 2007 then it has to be the GRANTA DIARY 2007 – CLASSIC CRIME.
