Marty Nickerson is asked by her law partner and significant other, Harry Madigan, to defend an old friend. Harry and Louisa Rawlings were once seriously involved but she chose to move on to a richer man. Now Louisa is accused of murdering her current husband Herb.

Herb was much older than Louisa and was her second husband. He was also a very rich man with a daughter from his previous marriage. Louisa believes Herb killed himself but the police and the DA believe otherwise. Marty is uncertain as to her client's innocence but she is willing to investigate the situation before making her decision. When Louisa is arrested, Marty realizes that not only must she prove her client is innocent she must also find the killer as well.

The cast of possible suspects is a mixed bunch. There is Herb's daughter Anastasia, who is a bitter trust fund snob. There is Anastasia's live-in boyfriend, who is a struggling mystery writer enjoying the rich life. There is also Louisa's ex-husband, who keeps trying to get back together. And this is not to mention all of the possible suspects outside of the family.

Marty has her hands full as the police present incriminating evidence to the jury. Regardless of the motives of the other suspects, Marty must somehow demonstrate that they had the means and opportunity to murder Herb. If Marty cannot find the real killer quickly, her client will be sentenced for a crime she did not commit.

MAXIMUM SECURITY is a step above the traditional legal thriller. While all of the standards of a legal thriller are included in this book, the characters take MAXIMUM SECURITY one step farther. In addition to the crazy suspects listed above, Louisa Rawlings is a money-hungry trophy wife who manages to remain friends with her ex-husband. Her sense of humor makes up for a lot of her other character flaws.

Marty Nickerson is a strong protagonist. She is a talented lawyer with a strong sense of justice. Marty also has a strong sense of her own worth. She is not happy defending her significant other's ex-lover but she is secure enough to not worry (overly) about losing him. The combination of her legal abilities with her self-assurance make Marty a character one cannot help but hope appears in additional books.
