Californian private investigator Regan Reilly is slightly depressed and bummed. A huge snowstorm has hit the east coast, which means that she will not be able to fly over to visit her family or spend time with her fiance as she had originally planned.

However, there is a silver lining. Her best friend, Kit Callan, is in Hawaii and has invited Regan to spend a bachelorette weekend with her. Regan jumps at the chance to spend some time with her friend, but she also has an ulterior motive. A body has washed over the beach at Kit's hotel and she is interested in investigating. What more could a girl ask for?

BURNED is the latest entry in the past-participle titled series featuring Regan Reilly and a number of supporting characters. The one thing readers need to remember when reading this book is that this series is meant to be light-hearted -- it relies heavily on coincidences, quirky characters, and over-the-top situations. If you overanalyze it you are guaranteed not to enjoy it.

The body in question is Dorinda Dawes, a marketing director for the Waikiki Waters Playground & Resorts. She was found at the hotel's beach shore wearing a lei that was stolen from a museum over 30 years ago. Where has it been all of these years? Dorinda Dawes tended to rub people the wrong way as she was trying to become a big-time gossip reporter with little success. Dorinda had only been in Hawaii in the last few months having never lived there before. It is a mystery how the lei came into her possession.

Regan is asked by the hotel management to investigate the murder in order to prevent the bad publicity, but all that Regan is left with are lots of questions. Could the hotel manager have an ulterior motive? And what about the hotel's guests? Some of them are carrying secrets that may or may not be relevant to the investigation.

If you are expecting a serious resolution, you can forget it. There are too many coincidences here. Carol Higgins Clark's books are meant to be a light read. I just found it to be a bit too light, although it was fun for as long as it lasted.
