Young widow Cate Nightingale has moved to a small town in Idaho to run a bed and breakfast and to live in safety with her four-year-old twin boys. One day a guest runs off without telling anyone and leaves his things in the room.

Then mob hitmen show up and demand the man's property at gunpoint from Cate. Luckily the town's shy handyman Cal is there and to Cate's surprise he runs the hit men off, showing that there is more to that young man than Cate has ever imagined. His action also reawakens Cate's longing to share her life with a man.

Unfortunately the hitmen have been offered too much money to just give up and in order to get what they want it's decided to isolate the town and menace all the inhabitants there until Cate gives up what they think she possesses. They get thugs, with their own issues against local people as backup, bring in loads of modern weaponry and attack the town.

It's then up to Cate and her neighbors to defend themselves. Fortunately Cal was a former Marine as was another neighbor. With their leadership they try to survive until help can come.

If you keep in mind that romance is the only reason for all the things that happens in this story, then this book achieves its aim. A lonely, loving, lovely widow finally opens her heart to a deserving man and they fight the dangers of the world together and find sex and happiness and marriage. If you like romance stories I guess that's enough.

As for the rest of us who want some logic in their reading, COVER OF NIGHT makes absolutely no sense. That the hitmen think that attacking a whole town would be a good way to get information that Cate might not even have is ludicrous. The book even agrees when one hitman calls the plan stupid, but they go ahead anyway. The idea of attacking a town is used only as a means to create some sort of a reason for Cal to show off his super, tough, Marine combat training and to impress Cate.

COVER OF NIGHT is just for romance readers. All others should keep far away from it.
