Steve Ireland is a Special Forces assassin. He is well trained and very good at his job. He and his team have been successful on many missions and have rid the world of many bad guys. In this book, Ireland is on the hunt for a Middle Eastern terrorist group. This group has targeted many and need to be stopped ASAP.

As Ireland searches for these men, he finds evidence that someone, an assassin, or several someones, remain one step ahead of him. Is this second group of killers on the same side? Are they allies? Does the US government know they exist? Do these men have a connection to his grandfather, who was also a Special Forces assassin? Ireland must find answers to these questions and more if he has any hopes of getting out of this situation alive.

THE RETURN OF THE DOG TEAM is a stereotypical testosterone-driven men's adventure novel. The characters are somewhat one-dimensional and simplistic. In the view of the world presented in this book, everything is a simple matter of black and white: the good guys always win and the bad guys get what is coming to them. As in many adventure/ war novels, the characters are slightly misogynistic in their actions towards and understanding of women.

While it would be easy to group this book with the other testosterone-filled post 9/11 action thrillers, it is not quite that easy. While this book is influenced by 9/11 and the threat of terrorist attacks, William W Johnstone has written books similar to this one long before the year 2001. While this long-standing formula is appealing to Johnstone's long time fans, it is mind-numbing to a reader facing a glut of terrorist thrillers.

THE RETURN OF THE DOG TEAM is the follow up to Johnstone's THE LAST OF THE DOG TEAM, which features Steve Ireland's grandfather, Terry Kovack.
