Olivia St Martin loves her job as director of Trace Evidence and Materials Analysis at the FBI's lab in Virginia. She has a solitary life, and is happiest in the lab where she knows she is making a difference.

Liv's life was never the same afterwards when, at the age of five, she saw her older sister kidnapped. When Missy's body was discovered, her parents went off the deep end and Liv never felt as though she had a family again. A brief marriage to a co-worker ended in divorce, but they are still friends.

Liv is in for another shock -- after 34 years in prison, when DNA evidence proved him not guilty, the man Liv identified as Missy's kidnapper is released from prison. Liv can't believe that her testimony put an innocent man away and the killer has been walking free all these years. Then when two identical murders of young blonde girls are discovered in the Seattle area, she has to do something.

Liv gets unofficially attached to the Seattle PD's investigation. Detective Zack Travis is in charge of the investigation and is at first suspicious of Liv and her unofficial status, but soon comes to depend on her with her wealth of knowledge and extensive background on the cases of murdered girls all over the country.

It seems inevitable that Liv, who never lets anyone close to her, and Zack, victim of countless broken romances and a failed marriage, will get together. They are drawn together by the fact that both had sisters who were murdered and by the justice that they both seek for all victims' families. As the tension mounts and Liv has a couple of brushes with death, she and Zack realize that they do want to be together.

The author is a member of Romance Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers. She wears those three hats well and this book contains elements of all three, but especially thriller and romance. Brennan combines those elements into a fast paced and very readable novel.

This book and her two other books THE PREY and THE HUNT all feature strong, independent women doing sometimes dangerous jobs. They also feature romance between likeable and well-matched couples. All of the characters are well defined; from the cop on watch at the crime scene to the mentally unstable serial killer they have to deal with.
