The Watchmaker is a cold and calculating criminal mastermind. Has Lincoln Rhyme met his match? Not likely, but this is a clever and twisted killer. His MO is that he leaves a ticking clock at the scene of the murder. The two clocks the police have found so far are identical. There are no prints or any other clues left at the site. The cops do get lucky and find the clocks' seller. The bad news is that the killer purchased ten identical clocks.

Traveling around New York City in the unseasonably cold winter, the Watchmaker and his partner stalk their victims. Vincent, the sidekick, is a sad, needy case. He doesn't know how he got so fortunate as to team up with the man he thinks of as the first real friend he has ever had.

Vincent has a lot of problems, not the least of which are the sick things he plans to do to the woman on their hit list. While most normal people would not consider a cold calculating character such as the Watchmaker as a real friend, that just goes to emphasize the emptiness of Vincent's life.

Lincoln and Amelia are working with their usual team, including Kathryn Dance, on loan from the California State Bureau of Investigation. Kathryn's area of expertise is in interviewing and interrogation and she first meets the team when she is asked to interview a witness who seems to be lying. Kathryn's use of her excellent ability to read body language and her innate curiosity about people makes her expertise invaluable.

The author has written six previous novels featuring Lincoln and Amelia, and at least a dozen or more others. In this current novel he is once again at the top of his game. I thought that perhaps the last one was not up to the usual high intensity that fans have come to expect from this series.

However, THE COLD MOON is positively brilliant. There are twists and turns amongst the twists and turns. Just when the reader thinks he has it all figured out -- think again. All of Deaver's fans are used to shocking revelations and conclusions, but he has outdone himself this time. This is definitely going on my 'best of '06' list.
