To say that Charley Fairfax and her husband Jack, are an unusual couple would be an understatement. Charley is an heiress and Jack runs a software security company -- at least that is what he claims.

Jack is a bit of a mystery man, but Charley knew that when she married him. Relaxing in their new home in San Francisco, which is almost entirely empty except for the bed in the master bedroom and the computers in Jack's office, Charley contemplates a day of reading scripts. Charley operates a non-profit repertory company and she and Simon, the theater manager, are trying to find ideas for the coming season. Jack, however, has other ideas and he drags her along to a luncheon meeting with the head of a high-tech software company.

Morgan Stokes shows up at the meeting in a state and shakily informs them that his fiancee has been murdered. The police say she slipped in the steam room of her health club but Morgan doesn't believe it. He had wanted to hire Jack's company to find a bug in the company's software which had been discovered by Clara, the dead woman. Now he wants Jack to help solve her murder.

Ultimately, Charley and Simon and Charley's two best friends, Eileen and Brenda, go undercover as consultants to Stokes' company. Jack and his partners are already known to some of the employees, thus the need to use new faces in the undercover operation. When two more people in the company die, suspiciously, Jack begins to wonder what he has gotten Charley and her friends into.

This is the second book in the series featuring the extremely wealthy Charley. The first book, SPEAK NOW introduced Charley, her friends and her Uncle Harry. He was her guardian as her parents died when she was a child, and he is rich, rowdy and a playboy at heart. But he has a good heart and Charley is horrified to think that he has a thing for one of her friends. Harry also knows when to come to the rescue, which he does in HOW TO SUCCEED IN MURDER. Sort of.

Jack is a hunk, Charley is a bit of a spoiled rich girl and Simon is stereotyped as a gay theater personality. The other characters are refreshing changes of pace. Eileen is a hyper-organized financial manager and Brenda is a professor of Woman's Studies. They are definitely an unlikely gang of detectives but when the chips are down, they come through.
