Vin Repetto is a retired NY homicide detective. He is attempting to enjoy his retirement and make up for all of the years where his wife did not know if he was coming home on time or at all. But a serial killer is targeting people in New York City and the department asks Repetto to return to the force to stop the killer.

He continues to tell them no as he does not want to upset his family situation. The Night Stalker, as the serial killer is nicknamed, wants Repetto on the case and will do everything within his power to make sure that it happens. Once the killings begin to get personal, Repetto does rejoin the police for this one case. What he discovers is that the Night Stalker is playing a twisted game in which there might not be any winners. Unless the Night Stalker begins to leave useful clues for the police, the city of New York will continue to fear the night.

In FEAR THE NIGHT, John Lutz plays on the general public's fear of serial killers and the dangers New York holds or appears to hold. The idea of someone killing others for no reason -- people he does not even know -- is frightening to most. When there is no rhyme or reason to a series of murders, anyone and everyone could be the target.

The one thing that this book lacks is a sense of drama. While the characters all start off with a sense of purpose and a goal of bringing down a killer, everyone loses their spark as the investigation slows down. After the first couple of murders, the book becomes more run of the mill and boring. It is hard to feel anything for any of the characters when they begin to expect the killer to get away. While the tension does start to build up again within the last 50 pages of the book, the 200 before that drags.
