There are two ways that you can see HOAX. If you have read the entire (or most of the) series featuring New York District Attorney Roger 'Butch' Karp and his vigilante wife Marlene Ciampi, you might find this book to be a nuisance and not worthy of your time. Nothing that I say will make an impact. On the other hand, if you are slightly familiar with the series or just a beginner you might want to give this book a try.

The main plot of the story involves a well-liked candidate, running for New York City mayor, who is anything but nice. For most of his life Andrew Kane has lied, cheated, and stolen to get to where he is today. He is one of the most powerful people in New York, but that is not enough for him. He wants to control everything and he will do everything to make sure that he gets it.

Kane has a lot of powerful men in his pocket including the New York Archdiocese and he has a plan to becoming mayor and getting revenge to those he considers hurt him. The one person he has underestimated is Butch Karp, the new District Attorney for the state of New York. Butch has no time for politicians, butt-kissing, red tape, or fools. He only lives for the search of justice. Ever since he met Kane, his 'spidey-sense' has been on high alert. How true it is. The battle begins with the murder of a rap star, a small cog to Andrew Kane's master plan. This should be fun.

What makes this novel good is the great number of terrific characters that the author has interspersed in the book. Most of these characters have a history with Butch and through flashbacks and recollections we get to learn what has happened to Butch and his family since the series first started almost two decades ago. The characters are on the forefront while the story of the mayor is in the back burner.

However getting to read these back stories gives you a greater appreciation to what is going to happen in the rest of the book. There are a lot of fans that feel that this novel is a major step backward for the series, but I disagree. After having finished it, I'm inspired to read the earlier novels of this series. Take my advice for what is worth. I liked HOAX, but I understand and respect why other people do not. It is that that makes reviewing a book rather interesting.
