Rosamund, the foster daughter of Susanna, Lady Appleton, is causing trouble. She has tempted several other girls to go to the Roman Baths at Buxton. They are caught by one of their tutors -- and the next day this tutor is found dead besides the well.

Rosamund has determined that she was murdered and this theory reaches Lady Appleton. Susanna decides that she needs to visit the baths for their healing properties and to check in with Rosamund. If by some chance there is validity to Rosamund's belief, Susanna should be at hand to help with an investigation.

Shortly after her arrival, Susanna discovers that Buxton is a haven for both courtiers and spies. There are supporters of Mary Queen of Scots, who are plotting her return to this town. Susanna must determine whether this plot could be accomplished and if any of the conspirators are responsible for the murders. Once again, Susanna finds herself involved in a criminal investigation where appearances are deceiving. She must find answers to her questions quickly as the killer targets those close to her.

FACE DOWN BESIDE ST. ANNE'S WELL follows the format set up by the other books in the FACE DOWN series. Susanna finds herself investigating some crime in order to protect herself, her family or friends from trouble. She is not well liked by everyone but she knows how to play her role in society. In addition, she is very understanding and sympathetic to others' plights.

This series is also known for including some reference to the political issue of Mary Queen of Scots. Obviously this situation would have been important in the Court as she threatened the current powers.

The dialogue in FACE DOWN BESIDE ST. ANNE'S WELL is credible in that it seems normal for the time period. While all of her characters are caught up in the social mores of the time, which dictated life to a great extent, all of her characters manage to seem as though they fit into the role society has given them.

The dialogue in this book is in no way contemporary or modern. In fact all of the interactions and conversations seem unnatural to one not familiar with this historical time period. To those who are familiar with this period, the behavior of the characters appear realistic and natural.

FACE DOWN BESIDES ST. ANNE'S WELL is the ninth full-length mystery to feature Susanna, Lady Appleton. She also appears in a collection of short stories.
