Lt John Driscoll is a homicide cop in the NYPD. He is devoted to his job and to his wife Colleen. A few years ago, in a horrendous accident his 14-year-old daughter Nicole was killed and his wife was critically injured.

Colleen has lingered, comatose, for six years. Driscoll has her at home, where she has a full-time nurse and every medical necessity for keeping her alive. Driscoll's life might also have ended on that day, except for his courage and his dedication to the people of New York.

Driscoll is put at the head of a task force investigating a serial killer stalking New York. The killer is crafty, intelligent and utterly brutal. He mutilates and removes the bones of his victims and keeps the heads. The mayor and all the public servants are demanding that the killer be captured. The dead women seem to have nothing in common with each other, until a young student, who is a dedicated computer hacker, proposes her theory to Driscoll.

In the meantime, a further complication arises for Driscoll when he admits that he is attracted to Margaret, his sergeant and partner. Raised a Catholic, his guilty conscience tells him he is still married and he tries to resist the growing feelings between the two of them. Is there hope for this couple? Is there any doubt!

The details of the murders are not for the squeamish -- however, the author does not dwell on the horrors, telling just enough to give the reader the picture. As a police procedural it works well; besides the main characters there are a number of supporting characters all of whom are well-drawn. I do have a quibble with Driscoll utilizing a teenager in his investigation; I would suspect that cops would not involve a civilian in their cases, but it works as a major breakthrough in the investigation.
