Vince Flynn is undoubtedly the Tom Clancy of my generation. The accuracy and meticulous research done in his Mitch Rapp books give the reader a rare glimpse into the truth of the world the CIA is today, actively engaged in the War on Terror. Flynn is now the storyline consultant for the hit series 24, practically has the Secret Service on his speed dial, and has created a franchise character that many of us hope and pray exists in real life. He has become a pre-eminent expert in terrorism.

In this sixth novel in the series, a Saudi billionaire who believes Mitch Rapp is responsible for his son's demise targets Rapp for assassination. Rapp's political life is in turmoil as well; the President has just assigned a new Director of National Intelligence whose agenda does not coincide with Rapp's. His clashes with Rapp give a real sense of the issues facing the US today. Rapp's best cheerleader, Irene Kennedy, the Director of the CIA, is doing her best to keep him above the fray. His marriage to NBC reporter Anna Reilly seems to be the one happy constant in Rapp's life.

At the heart of this book is a scene incredibly upsetting to many loyal fans, and is the final impetus for Rapp. He has always killed for the safety and well-being of his country, done the hard jobs and lived with the consequences of having to be an empty soul. Now Rapp kills for his own personal revenge, and the actions make his character come alive on the page.

I felt this book was a true resurgence of Rapp's character and the immediacy of the storyline is grabbing. Rapp's character is suffering his own real pain for the first time in years and is very accessible. The writing, plotting and pacing are much better than his last book, MEMORIAL DAY, harkening back to my favorite in the series, TRANSFER OF POWER.
