In 1948, Morris Weiss is hired to clear Joey Ginzberg's name. Joey is accused of murder. He has a criminal rap sheet but swears that he is reformed. Murder is never an easy rap to beat especially when the person is Jewish in the 1940s.

In modern day New York, Max Weiss is hired to find April Freid's missing uncle. Her uncle Felix dropped out of sight unexpectedly and has made no contact with his friends or family. When they find clues that point to his location, he leaves before Max or April can find him. He has a hidden secret that could result in the murder of all of them. Max must find him before more innocent people are killed.

On the surface these two criminal investigations have nothing in common yet they do. Both deal with the Weiss family. Max learned the trade from his Uncle Morris. In addition, as Max investigates his missing person's case, he finds more and more connections to his uncle's investigation. While Max is unaware of the fact, he frequently echoes the actions and decisions of his uncle. It is interesting to see how much behavior is inherent and how much is learned.

Isidore Haiblum's debut novel NEW YORK CONFIDENTIAL is written around two investigations. The first investigation is the one Morris is conducting. This case is harder to get interested in. When the book starts, not a lot of background information is provided. It takes a lot longer for Morris and his contacts to seem real and become interesting to the reader.

The second investigation is that of Max. Max seems completely different than his uncle. Max is less sure of himself and more laid-back about his case. His voice is fresher, which makes his investigation jump off the pages. Both of the Weiss men are products of their generations.
