High-octane is a good word that comes to mind when one is reading the latest Tim Rackley series. TROUBLE SHOOTER follows on from THE KILL CLAUSE and THE PROGRAM, the first two novels in the series to feature the US marshall (and ex-army ranger).

Rackley, nicknamed 'Troubleshooter' because he's usually in trouble and he shoots a lot of people, is back on the job after breaking up a mind-control cult in his second Hurwitz outing. Those readers that have read the earlier books will no doubt feel a lurch of unease because of Rackley's wife's pregnancy. Both of them are still feeling the repercussion of their daughter's death.

Not all bikers are malevolent, cruel, and wicked but in this case you have the one per cent who are perhaps the most evil people around and who give the other 99 per cent a bad name. In TROUBLE SHOOTER the nomads who do the dirty work on behalf of one of the nastiest and most vicious biker gangs, the Laughing Sinners, kill a couple of Rackley's friends and colleagues while aiding the escape of their leader out of US Marshall custody.

To make things worse they also go on a rampage and sadistically decimate members of the rival Cholos gang in preparation for a drug deal involving a powerful new form of liquid heroin called Allah's Tears. Clearly, something dangerous is afoot.

Rackley's concentration on the case is further hindered by the fact that his heavily pregnant wife is left for dead by the gang after she attempts to bring in the leader of the gang by herself. As usual, Rackley is aided by his two colleagues that he can depend on, Bear and Guerrera, and the conversations that he has with his comatose wife in his mind. Rackley pulls out all the stops to apprehend the vicious killers and stop a deadly consignment of pure heroin from hitting the streets.

This is a great novel -- taut, full of suspense and a page-turner. The action is non-stop and Hurwitz's plotting is not only tight but it is also evident that the research has been meticulously done. For new readers, starting the series with this book does not pose many problems, apart from the odd references to what happened in THE KILL CLAUSE. Hurwitz does not give the reader time to ponder, as they will be too busy turning pages to see what happens next.

This is my idea of a top-notch novel, one that draws you in from the first page and makes you want to finish reading it at one go. Rackley is stylish, sexy and will certainly join my list of favourite protagonists. Hurwitz is must-read author and you know that you will not be disappointed. TROUBLE SHOOTER is a cracking and well-written book and I look forward to reading the next in the series before too long.
