Alex Price is coming into Fairbanks, Alaska, with some academic administrators, heading for a conference at the university. He will have some time on his hands, so he calls his friend and former prospecting partner Stan to invite him to dinner. Instead, Stan asks him to meet at the Rendezvous Club. He has something he wants to tell Alex but he doesn't want his wife Angie to overhear.

When Stan arrives, he starts to tell Alex that he thinks someone is following him because of something he overheard as he was leaving work. Before he can tell him more, they are interrupted by some good ol' boys who just want to include everyone in their conversation and drinking.

Stan and Alex agree to meet in the parking lot, but before Alex can get there, Stan's truck explodes in a fireball. Alex is temporarily knocked out but Stan is dead. Alex heads for Stan's suburban house to tell Angie, Stan's Athabascan wife, about the tragedy before she hears it from strangers.

While Angie is trying to come to terms with her sudden widowhood, two men dressed as policemen come in. Alex is suspicious and they escape, taking Stan's shotgun with them. Angie and Alex are both at home on the river, so they take off in a boat, trying to outrun their pursuers back to Fairbanks.

The book takes us over most of the course of the oil pipeline that was being built at the time. Alex is attracted to Angie who is beautiful, resourceful, and intelligent, but she is his best friend's widow, so they travel as brother and sister. He starts to wonder about his bachelorhood.

Poisoned Pen Press has come up with another fine new author. Porter brings Alaska to life and shows why people who live there love it, despite its extreme climate. He also gives us an insight into the various groups of native Americans who inhabit it. Porter is an author to watch.
