Sarah Brandt lives on Bank Street and is a practising midwife, much to the dismay of her parents, who are members of turn of the century New York's upper middle class aristocracy. Sarah had married a doctor, who worked among the poor until he was murdered, and now she carries on his work.

She has taken in Aggie, a mute four-year-old from the Prodigal Son mission, along with Maeve, an older girl, who acts as nanny. Sarah arrives home early one morning, after helping with a delivery on the Lower East Side, to find a note from Mr and Mrs Wilfred Linton of Lenox Hill on the posh upper East Side, asking her please to visit at her earliest convenience. She takes a nap, and much refreshed, goes to see what is happening.

Grace Linton is a beautiful 17-year-old with the mind of a five-year-old. She has been sheltered all her life, never going out unaccompanied and only going to events at church with her mother. But she is pregnant and Sarah agrees to help take care of Grace during her pregnancy, as well as trying to find out who inseminated her.

Meanwhile, DS Frank Malloy, Sarah's friend, has been called to Felix Decker's office. Felix Decker is Sarah's father, and he is trying to win Sarah back into the family and away from her chosen profession. Felix asks Malloy to look into the death of Dr Brandt. He is hoping that the policeman will find something dishonorable in the doctor's background and change Sarah's view of him.

Thompson has again successfully brought us back into the world of gas-lit New York, especially the dichotomy between the rich and the poor. She also gives us an idea of the changes beginning to take place. The character of Malloy's little son, who was born deaf and crippled, is used to show what medical advances are taking place in this world.

We want to know how Dr Brandt died and we want to know if Frank and Sarah get together, despite Frank's mother's objections. And even Sarah's nosy next door neighbor is someone we'd like to meet. MURDER ON LENOX HILL is number seven in the series. May Thompson not run out of New York neighborhoods.
