Ethel Jandrice, a cataloguer for the Minnesota Historical Society, is in charge of logging in and organizing new collections. She comes across a letter hinting at illegal activities sometime around 1900 by a member of the De Vole family, founders of the eponymous Chicago corporation.

Only the middle part of the letter has survived. It is from Tony to Wally and talks about family treasure sent on the Amador. Who were Tony and Wally? Ethel, who has never stolen anything in her life, takes the letter home with her to show her boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Mary Whitney and Michael Tanner are relaxing with another couple on a 35-foot sailboat near Chequanegon Bay on Lake Superior. Mary picks up a piece of metal about 12 feet below the surface. The brass plate is from one of the many ships sunk in the waters of the lake, the Amador.

When they return to shore, they research the Amador and find she was sunk in 1905. Searchers had looked around Sand Island for her, but no trace was ever found. Mary found the piece of metal off Devil's Island, nowhere near the last reported location of the ship.

Jandrice is murdered. The piece of metal, which had been turned over to the authorities since it had been found in a protected area of the lake, is stolen. Someone is trying to cover up this 100-year-old tragedy. What current crime is being hidden?

Lake Superior is definitely a character in this book. It's like a person, with changeable moods and it holds secrets in its cold waters. As Mary and Michael try to get to the bottom of one secret, they uncover some modern ones.

The sailing and diving scenes are exciting, even to this confirmed landlubber who gets sick standing on a dock. It is very plausible that a ship can go down in Lake Superior and never be found, even though the cold water is a fine preservative of wood. Brookins is published by a small press in Texas. Perhaps it is time for a larger company to look at his work.
