Just married Grace Gillespie, now Grace Cameron, has her hands full. Shortly before the wedding, Uncle Duncan Cameron, the man who raised her husband, Stuart, had a stroke and it's affected his personality for the worse. The formerly charming and demure man is now a lewd, all hands, lecher.

The convalescent hospital has thrown him out as he is too hard to handle and now he's back in his old room in Stuart's large home. Hoping that they can finally take their honeymoon, Grace, a former nurse and physiotherapist, makes certain that the elderly man has two live-in nurses, and the newlyweds leave for their holiday.

But reports from home are dire; the nurses are threatening to walk off the job because Duncan's manner has become even more outrageous, so the couple returns home. Quite suddenly, two days later, Duncan passes away. Grace and Stuart look ahead to starting their life together, but the funeral is interrupted by a visit from the police.

Large amounts of money were discovered to have been withdrawn from his account after Duncan was incapacitated. Then the autopsy reveals that his death was not a natural one stemming from his weakened condition. Murder has been committed.

As the beneficiaries of Duncan's will, Stuart and Grace are at the forefront of prime suspects and Grace finds that to be an intolerable situation. She sets out to discover the real guilty party.

HEIRS AND GRACES by author Gerald Hammond is a delightful book, a fine mystery cozy, filled with interesting people and a fine lead character with a straightforward way and a head set firmly on her shoulders. Though not the first of the series, the readers will have no problem getting up to speed with the story and the history between the characters.

HEIRS AND GRACES stands well on its own. It's rather short, though, and will make up only a single day's read, so be prepared to gobble this enjoyable book up in one sitting.
