The prologue situates Jessica Fletcher on a lobster boat where she wakes with a goose egg on her head and a sense of disorientation and fear surrounding her. As she searches for some way to find safety, she finds a body.

This story commences two weeks prior to the prologue. Cabot Cove, Maine, embarks on a lobster festival. This area boosts an ample share of tourists. Some of the ideas to bring more community to the local people and also enhance tourism for this special day is a parade, craft fair, art exhibit, Miss Cabot Cove contest and a lobster dinner. With the residents contributing their ideas, Jessica is assigned to write a promotional and informational story regarding the day in the life of a lobsterman.

The lobstermen are a tight group. When Jessica seeks permission to write this article, she learns about their arguments and disputes. Some of the controversies surround money. Many of the clan do not think they are paid competitively.

Their broker, Mr Pettie, is in the middle of this. His job is to ensure their financial future; some people think he is failing them. After uncomfortable exchanges of conversations, Mrs Fletcher is summoned to be on the lobster boat of Levi Carver at five o'clock the following morning.

The picturesque Maine lobster boat is filled with a fish smell, a smell that will turn sour as the day progresses. That is not the only thing that turns sour! The unstable climate of discontentment among the lobstermen result in talk of starting a co-op. The suggestion of price gorging is discussed.

This book comfortably brings the reader to the Maine lobster area. Not knowing much about this business, I learn that lobsters must be measured with a decision as to whether they will be kept or thrown back. Maine has a requirement in order to protect the future of the lobster business. When an incident happens to one of the men's boats, you know that this is the beginning of more to come. Jessica's sleuthing ability finds murder, greed and jealousy.

This is a comfort read for MURDER SHE WROTE fans. Regular characters, such as Doc Hazlitt and Mort the sheriff ease into the storyline. Doc Hazlitt's niche is to judge the Miss Cabot Cove Lobsterfest contest and to use his medical skills. Once again, Cabot Cove explores the friends, neighbors and enemies that live here.
