Thousands die in the city of Hama, Syria, but buildings and structures are intact, without any damage at all. In the US, they believe that a pure fusion bomb was set off there. When they discover that there are more of these bombs in the USA and that more are being made in Iraq, it is down to a group of four men to search out and destroy the bomb-making facilities.

Coming at a time when the fear of terrorism in the USA, and indeed, across the world, is at its highest, PURE FUSION sounds a note of caution to those who are tempted to dismiss a terrorist threat. The story is set in 2010, but the book was actually finished in the January of 2001, meaning that the Al Qaeda attacks on the World Trade Center and the US-led invasion of Iraq have not been incorporated into the story.

Nevertheless, Buchanan makes a big threat from Al Qaeda and the corrupt leadership of Iraq, who are manufacturing as many bombs as possible to wreak havoc across the USA.

Whilst Buchanan's plot is interesting, some of his dialogue is distinctly dire. There are moments when you could wince at certain lines given to the characters. This is where more judicious editing should come into play and this ropey dialogue ought to have been spotted and improved.

PURE FUSION reads very much like a thriller from the 1970s, but with updated technological information and characters. His characters are a mixed group and are interesting. Buck, the head of the SEAL group, is a good character, but his portrayal is spoilt by the idea that when he has to dress like a terrorist, he wears 'scraggly beards, [and] long, oily hair'.

PURE FUSION is by no means the best of its genre out there, but it is an interesting read and one that has written by an author who has clearly researched his subject in great depth.
