Children's writer Willy Pactrick lives in New Jersey in the beautiful home of her fiancé. She's won awards for her children's books and her future should be looking bright, but Willy thinks she's on the brink of a mental breakdown.

Years earlier her daughter and first husband were killed in a car crash but it wasn't an accident. She is certain that a very secret organization that her husband followed was responsible for their deaths. Now Willy is hearing her daughter cry out to her from the grave, begging for help. And to make matters worse, Willy has just discovered that her new fiancé might have been involved in what happened to her family.

Tim Underhill lives in the trendy area in lower Manhattan in New York City. Like Willy, he too is having problems with dead people. Tim is receiving emails from them and he keeps seeing his sister who died many years ago when she was ten. The emails and his sister are attempting to give him some kind of message but he has no idea what it can be. After he sees a very angry angel glaring at him, Tim realizes he had better find out what he did wrong and how he can fix it. Luckily, soon an email comes from a helpful angel who tries to steer him in the right direction.

Tim meets Willy when he gives a reading from his newest book. They soon discover how similar their situations are and they fall in love, all the while very aware that their new joy will soon end.

IN THE NIGHT ROOM by Peter Straub is a very complex book and it's filled with multiple storylines. Straub manages to weave all the aspects of this book together perfectly and the result is a terrific horror novel. There is one big twist that is written without any fanfare whatsoever and it's slipped in with such subtly that it amazes the reader! I had to go back a paragraph or two just to see if I read it correctly. This book is masterfully crafted.

Peter Straub has been writing horror books for many years and his talent is not waning. Read IN THE NIGHT ROOM for a great story that will keep you turning the pages until you've reached the end of the story.
