For the last several years Jack has been one of the walking dead. All reason for living has been extinguished from him after an at-large serial killer brutally murdered and butchered his entire family. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he went the Batman route and went through some training -- martial arts, weapons training, torturing techniques, and so on.

With these acquired skills he has become a vigilante whose only purpose in life is to kill serial killers. He manages to do what the police can't -- find them. Plus he also has some special techniques to have the killers confess on tape to all of their brutalities. He has even managed to snag himself a partner, a former prostitute who goes by the name of Nikki, whose role is usually that of bait.

When they are both finished with their 'victim,' they leave the body for the police to find as well as tape recordings detailing the victim's crimes. Jack manages to close more cases and bring closure to the families of the victim's victims. This has earned him the moniker of the Closer.

In this book, The Closer hits the mother lode as he learns of a message board used by serial killers in order to share their misunderstood views on humanity. It is there that Jack finds the person responsible for the death of his family and he wants his vengeance. The name of the killer is Patron, a man who considers himself to be the ultimate puppet master.

Nikki is concerned that Jack is beginning to like killing a little too much and wonders what will happen after he kills the Patron. The Patron is a cold sadistic killer who always manages to be three steps ahead of them. It's a dog-eat-dog race as Closer and Patron try to outsmart and outwit each other but with only one winner. If this whets your appetite this is the book for you. If you are the squeamish type, there are some good recommendations on this site for tamer books.

THE CLOSER is a graphic and brutal novel of a lost man who climbs into the lion's den in order to find meaning in his dead life, hoping to one day make a difference. With each killing he does he continues to lose a piece of himself until there is nothing left. It is there where he is vulnerable. It is an interesting proposition. With the book's twists and turns, anything goes. Will he succumb? Will he finish his quest or just die? One way to know and I ain't tellin'. Pick this book if you dare.
