HOPES AND FEARS is the eight in the series featuring Peter Turnbull's dark and considerate police office Detective Chief Inspector George Hennessey along with his colleague CID officer Yellich and forensic pathologist Louise D'Acre.

When the body of a young girl who turns out to be Russian is found in the York woods, concern is raised because aside from the fact that it is evident that she is dead it is also clear that she has been kept frozen. Who would want to kill the young woman, an exchange student and could the murderer be a local?

All Hennessey's inquires come to nothing, as nobody seems to know her or is willing to reveal what he or she does know about her. As a result he has very little information to go on, only a number of rather doubtful leads. With a suspect-dating agency, a secretive beggar, and an elderly rich man who is determined to persuade the police that he is responsible for the brutal murder, Hennessey finds himself digging carefully around the information to reveal the truth.

Readers were first introduced to this intrepid police officer in the excellent FEAR OF DROWNING and it is clear that he is going to go far in his career. HOPES AND FEARS continues this admirable series and further shows why Hennessey is considered understanding and likable.

The book is a taut, psychological police procedural that leads DCI Hennessey through York's disturbing alternative lifestyle to its the upper classes where the reader is left in no doubt that behind closed doors anything can happen. Turnbull has written a very believable and moving novel that questions our perception of dating agencies, street beggars, and exchange students on a number of different levels. The reality of life is not a bed of roses, as one would like to think.

Peter Turnbull's Hennessey series is one of those police procedurals that sadly do not get the recognition that they so richly deserve. This I believe is not because it is not well written, but because it is battling amongst all the other police procedurals available. This is a shame because HOPES AND FEARS is a well-written, interesting novel that should be read. I am sure that with a lot more promotion this series will certainly reach a wider readership.
