Walt Longmire, the overweight, fiftyish sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, is called out to view the body of Cody Pritchard, who has died in what appears to be a hunting accident. Cody was one of four boys who had raped a young Cheyenne girl suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome.

Walt's deputy is an experienced young ex-Philadephia policewoman, Victoria Moretti (Vic), a foul-mouthed woman who moved to Wyoming when her husband accepted a job in Absaroka County. Longmire depends on her expertise, and, although he doesn't realize it, her friendship.

Henry Standing Bear, a Cheyenne, is Walt's oldest friend. He knows when to push and when to leave well enough alone. Walt's life out of work seems to have stopped when his wife died. He lives in an unfinished cabin that he and his wife started building before her untimely death. He doesn't seem to remember how long ago she died. His daughter is an attorney living in Philadelphia, so he is alone except for his friends and his job. He is considering not running for sheriff at the next election, and is grooming Vic for the job. However, he feels she is too highly qualified to want to stay in rural Wyoming for long.

The sheriff's department has to look more closely into Cody's death when another of the boys involved in the crime is found dead. Walt makes sure the remaining two are safe while he seeks the killer.

The scenery and mores of Wyoming are brought to life THE COLD DISH. Henry has given Walt a rifle that has a history with the Cheyenne nation, and the sheriff feels that the old Cheyenne helps him to stay safe and solve the crimes. Longmire is sort of a cross between Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight and Kent Krueger's Cork O'Connor. He's a man anyone would be proud to call a friend.
