The inhabitants of the small town of Sunrise Valley, Nevada, are evacuated minutes before a huge aerial bomb blows the town off the map leaving nothing but sand, sage and scrub.

Alex Cross, now troubleshooter with the FBI Terrorist Task Force for FBI director Burns, is called away from his vacation in San Francisco to investigate. From a video taken by a mountain climber of the incident and of a man also photographing the blast, Cross recognizes Geoffrey Shafer, known to Cross as the Weasel, a known murderer and an arch enemy of Cross.

A Russian mobster villain known as the Wolf claims responsibility. There follows two more fire bombings: one in England and one in Germany, but with no forewarning. Again the Wolf is calling the shots.. After killing the director of the CIA, he states his demands: two billion one hundred and fifty million US dollars, and 51 political prisoners released or London, New York, Washington, and Frankfurt will be totally destroyed.

The Wolf joins forces with the Weasel in his plans. He gives the FBI four days to deliver. Cross, torn between his family and duty, travels to London and Paris in his attempt to thwart the Wolf in his nefarious plot. His pursuit takes him on a mad race through the dangerous road in Monaco and the streets of Manhattan.

Written in Patterson's now familiar style of short chapters which speed the action and story, this is a story full of shocks and many twists. To appreciate the story fully the reader should have read Patterson's previous books as there are many references to past relationships, events and characters. The plot is an incredulous one with its concept a chilling one. It is short on character development and has virtually no locale descriptions, but it is a fast moving story that will entertain for an afternoon or evening.
