Tucker Sinclair is newly divorced, in line for a partnership in her prestigious management consulting firm, owns a little house on the beach in Los Angeles, and drives a Porsche. Although she's a bit lonely and prone to think of her ex-husband more often than she should, the future looks bright for our 30-year-old heroine. All that changes quickly, though, when an investor threatens to sue both the firm and Tucker personally over a wildly inaccurate business plan that bears her signature.

Tucker doesn't recognize the report. The numbers and projections in her original were vastly different from those she sees on the lines above her signature, but when she goes to the file to find her originals, the documents are missing. The board is meeting that very day over granting her a partnership, and things begin to look bleak for Tucker. Worse, the client in question, a rambunctious neurologist with dreams of wealth, is found dead.

Tucker takes off in her Porsche to get to the bottom of these ridiculous charges, clear her name, calm the investor, and the reassure the board in time to save her partnership. This, of course, turns out not to be easy, as Tucker is led a merry chase by some pretty quirky and sinister characters. You'll enjoy meeting the merry widow, the grief-stricken assistant, and Tucker's pals at work.

Patricia Smiley has written a clever, assured first novel. The plot is pretty predictable, but she keeps her readers amused enough to keep the pages turning. The characters are nicely drawn, and Muldoon, the westie Tucker cares for while her mother's away on a shamanic retreat, is sure to win your heart. Tuck this book in your beach bag or use it as an antidote to a boring commute. You may not find yourself laughing out loud, but you're sure to be entertained.
