Anita Blake, vampire killer, is one of the groomsmen at the wedding of Detective Tammy Reynolds, witch, and Larry Kirkland, a fellow vampire killer. Anita's date, Micah Callahan, wereleopard king, greets her after the ceremony on the reception line. The next person in line is Nathaniel, another member of the group of leopards, and her human servant, who works as a stripper in one of Jean-Claude's clubs. Jean-Claude is, of course, the vampire master of the City of St Louis and another of Anita's lovers. Detective Jessica Arnet makes a play for Nathaniel but Anita tells her that he is not available which immediately makes Arnet Anita's enemy.

A phone call comes in. A stripper has been found dead partially concealed behind a dumpster in back of the club in which she works. She is covered with vampire bites and Anita determines that seven vampires killed and drained the victim. The police are worried because of her connection to Jean-Claude.

When Anita returns home, she phones the witch who has been counseling her. Blake is confused about her options, but Marianne gives her wise advice and she decides she has to try to work through the problems inherent in being a raiser of the dead, a vampire killer, the lupa of the werewolves, the Nimir-Ra of the wereleopards, a vampire's human servant, besides also being a necromancer.

Much of this Diana Gabaldon-sized book deals with how Blake tries to consolidate her power with all the various supernatural beings, and, of course, this being a Laurell K Hamilton book, much of this power consolidation involves having sex with various gorgeous men. But there is a mystery there, and Anita really must find the group of vamps who are killing strippers. Lose yourself in the alternate world of Hamilton for a few hours. It's great escape from the mundane.
