Richard Stark continues the adventures of his anti-hero Parker in NOBODY RUNS FOREVER. The novel starts with a bang -- or, more accurately, a throttle when Parker has to break up his new gang's poker party when he sees one of the members wearing a wire. Unfortunately, the murder happens before they had discussed their new job, leaving everyone unemployed.

Since the attempt to hijack dental gold is now a bust, Parker starts listening when Dalesia suggests a good old-fashioned bank hit. The wife of the bank owner hates her husband and doesn't trust the divorce courts. Not when it would be so much more nasty, satisfying, and tax-free to help someone knock over the bank in return for a generous cut. Two small banks are merging, so assets worth millions will be vulnerable in armored cars.

Parker doesn't like working with amateurs, in or out of the gang. The nervous and waffling Jake is so terrified of going back to prison that he can't keep to his script. The venial Mrs Langen also starts improvising with disastrous results. If that wasn't bad enough, a detective is getting too close and a bounty hunter is getting closer still. Determined to get the bounty for the man killed on the first page (fortunately, he's wanted alive or dead) he doesn't care what he has to do to anyone in the gang. And they are equally callous towards him and his partner.

Will Parker and his gang get the money? If they do, will they get away?

NOBODY RUNS FOREVER is one of those gritty, dirty, harder-than-hardboiled books; cynical, action-packed, and bloody. It will doubtless please Stark fans, and is self-contained enough to be a good introduction to the series.
