Jackie Flowers is an attorney with a small problem; she is dyslexic. SEEDS OF DOUBT is the fourth book in this series, but the first one I've read. It begins with Jackie defending a driver on a DUI charge, and getting him off due to an officer's negligence. Then Jackie hears about the disappearance of Ben Sparks, which opens a recollection of memories from her childhood. It seems 30 years ago, another young boy disappeared, later to be discovered dead, in a similar fashion.

However, Rachel Boyd, a precocious child at that time, was accused of the murder. Now Rachel is out of prison, and is the main suspect in this new disappearance. Using flashbacks, via diary entries and newspaper articles, the author tries to connect the past crime to the present crime while showing how Rachel grew up while in prison.

Chris Boyd, Rachel's brother, comes to Jackie to help defend his sister from the charges and accusations being leveled against her. As Jackie and Pilar, Jackie's private investigator, look into the case, certain ideas and occurrences take place. Jackie's jewelry disappears, her car keys go missing, Jackie gets locked in the attic with a nest of angry wasps, and other odd events occur.

The author had me turning the pages, but when I finished, I felt like the book was missing something. I couldn't really connect with any of the characters, except Jackie's neighbor's child, Lily, who came across as a younger version of what Rachel had been like. Other than that, none of the characters really stood out. And the ending was predictable, as I had figured out what had occurred 30 years ago way before the end. I will give this author another try, but after that I'm not sure if this will be a continued series I want to stay with.
