Patience Sinclair is a PhD candidate who spends a summer with the rodeo in order to research her doctoral thesis on women in the rodeo. She also hopes to escape a fellow graduate student who is stalking her.

While traveling with the rodeo, Patience meets Dallas Kingman, the number one-ranked cowboy on the circuit. At first Patience and Dallas clash at every meeting, but as they get to know each other, their antagonism turns to attraction. Soon the two are lovers and are facing a series of dangerous 'accidents' connected with the rodeo.

Because Patience has already accepted a teaching job at a Boston College when she finishes her thesis and Dallas plans to earn enough money on the rodeo circuit to buy his own ranch, they realize that their goals are incompatible. However, they continue their relationship, planning to go their separate ways at the end of the summer.

But circumstances on the rodeo circuit become more dangerous as the summer progresses and threaten both Patience and Dallas and Dallas's uncle Charlie Carson's Circle C Rodeo Company. The mystery of why anyone would want to ruin Charlie deepens as more and more accidents occur, and these accidents lead to an unexpected source.

This novel, though it contains strong elements of mystery and suspense in both its primary and secondary storylines, is more romantic suspense than mystery. There are numerous instances of its heroine in peril, though, to Martin's credit, Patience often needs no help in getting out of danger. There are also several sexual encounters in the course of the novel.

If you enjoy a good romance with an added element of mystery and suspense, then you will find DESERT HEAT to be a satisfying read. However, if you are more interested in a traditional mystery with less romance, the story is not quite as satisfying.
